Where No Man Has Gone Before: A History of NASA's Apollo Lunar Expeditions (Dover Books on Astronomy), by William David Compton

This official NASA history chronicles the behind-the-scenes conflicts and cooperation during the Apollo expeditions. It shows how the space agency's scientists, who were primarily interested in the moon itself, worked out their differences with the engineers, who were charged with the astronauts' safe landing and return. The close collaboration between the scientists and engineers ensured the success of a program that remains a major achievement for both fields.
The first half of the book concerns the preparations for the Moon landings, tracing the development of the Apollo science program from the earliest days. The second half documents the flights that followed Apollo 11, during which twelve astronauts explored the lunar surface and returned with samples for investigation. The author drew upon the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center's collection of more than 31,000 Apollo-related documents and conducted more than 300 interviews with program participants to assemble this definitive survey.

Great book on Apollo commissioned by NASA .....
By alberchico
How is it that this book does not have any other reviews ? This book is excellent. Commissioned by NASA it is full of details on the moon program that will satisfy people with a passing interest and hardcore space geeks like me. A good companion volume would be "Apollo Expeditions to the Moon: The NASA History" also published by NASA........

Where No One Has Been Since
By B. Pohnan
This book makes a great attempt to document how NASA came to answer two fundamental questions about Project Apollo: (1) Exactly where, on the Moon, should the various Apollo missions be targeted and (2) What kind of science should be conducted on and from the lunar surface?

The answer to the first question is complicated because engineering and performance parameters limited the Apollo landings to a somewhat narrow band on the Moon's Near Side. Various groups of scientists then had to pick out the most desirable sites within that band. Of course the lists that these groups generated where not always the same and some of their lists had far many more sites than there were Apollo missions. The extremely complicated given and take between Apollo mission managers, operational managers, engineers, and scientists is described from an outside observer's detached point of view..

Then there was the second question which boiled down to, "Well we are here on the Moon, what do we do now?" Of course some scientists wanted lunar rocks and soil brought back to Earth, while others wanted to leave instruments on the moon to measure this or study that. These tasks too were limited by engineering and performance parameters. How many experiments could be packed, safely, on the lunar module where both volume and mass were at a premium. Also, how much lunar material could be safely put on aboard the lunar module and successfully launched from the lunar surface? Again, both volume and mass were at a premium. How NASA managed to reach the compromises with the various groups and not have serious bloodshed is a story unto itself.

Where No Man Has Gone Before is an excellent, non-technical overview of this sometimes ignored exploration aspect of Project Apollo and I highly recommend it. I suggest that the reader check out Appendix 3, which lists the 15 fundamental questions scientists hoped (in 1966) that Apollo would answer. Also, if the reader seeks further details and information, he or she should consider To A Rocky Moon by geologist Don E. Wilhelms, which gives first hand accounts of the give and take regarding land site selection. The International Atlas of Lunar Exploration by Philip J. Stooke provides many detailed maps of almost any potential lunar landing site that was on any credible list.

Starts slow and nerdy. Then becomes nail-biting and thrilling.
By Alan U. Kennington
This 1989 book, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", by William David Compton, is very professionally written by a real historian, not by a journalist or participant. So the first 50 or more pages seem quite dry, formal and bureaucratic. But luckily I stayed with it because as the story develops, the tension builds up. Even though I knew the outcomes of the various stages in the Apollo program, having watched it on TV at the time, and having read about it in science magazines during the 1960s and 1970s, I found myself anxious about the outcome of each moon landing as it was described in this book, only relaxing after each mission was completed. It was like being transported back in time. No one knew then how it would turn out. Disaster was always very close.

Some of the new things I learned from this book were the huge demands on the skills and knowledge of the astronauts, the disputes between scientists and engineers, the interesting choices for lunar orbits, the use of 100% oxygen in the command module, the nervousness about choosing landing sites which were not too rough, the impossibility of seeing anything while landing due to the dust clouds stirred up, the very substantial distances covered in the moon buggies, and the sudden public disinterest after the first landing. I learned a large amount from this book that I never knew about while watching it in real time on TV.

One negative of this book (for me) was the lack of diagrams showing the relations between the rocket stages and the command, service and lunar modules. But I guess such diagrams are easily obtained elsewhere. It would have been nice to have colour pictures too, but that would have put up the price, and there are more than enough colour pictures elsewhere. What this book provides is a serious, level-headed description of what really happened, not a shallow popular gung-ho ripping yarn.

There are very frequent references in this book to "Chariots for Apollo". So I have now put that book on order too.

The discussion of orbits in this book stimulated my interest in astrodynamics. So I have also ordered "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics", "Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics", "Modern Astrodynamics: Second Edition", "Theory of Satellite Geodesy: Applications of Satellites to Geodesy", "Introduction to Space Dynamics", and "An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics".

This book has restimulated my interest in a range of other subjects too. So I do definitely recommend this book if you can cope with a professional historian's dry account. It's a good overview of the most admirable engineering achievement of the 20th century.

Out of Control: Why Disciplining Your Child Doesn't Work and What Will, by Dr. Shefali Tsabary

Every parent wants the golden key to raising well-behaved, academically gifted, successful, happy children. Embedded in the collective psyche is the notion that discipline is the cornerstone to achieving these goals. Out of Control offers a never-before-published perspective on why the entire premise of discipline is flawed. Dr. Shefali Tsabary reveals how discipline is a major cause of generations of dysfunction. The author goes to the heart of the problems parents have with children, challenging society’s dependence on discipline, daring readers to let go of fear-based ideologies and replace them with an approach that draws parent and child together. The key is ongoing meaningful connection between parent and child, free from threats, deprivation, punishment, and timeouts — all forms of manipulation. Parents learn how to enter into deep communion with their children, understanding the reasons for a behavior and how to bring out the best in the child. Far from a laissez-faire, anything goes, approach, this is how a child learns responsibility and takes ownership of their life, equipped with character and resilience that flow naturally from within.

Review

The patterns of behavior we witness in childhood become the template for our own way of parenting.

It’s because discipline focuses on behavior, not on the feel- ings driving the behavior, that it undercuts the very thing we are trying to accomplish.

We’ve been so schooled to impose “lessons” on our children that it feels counterintuitive to allow the lesson to emerge naturally out of the situation.

The reality is that children learn not because we tell them, but from how we relate to them. It’s the differ- ence between “doing to” ver- sus “doing with.”

To give a child things or deprive them because to do so matches our subconscious agenda—our unresolved emo- tional baggage—rather than aligning with their develop- mental needs, is to court conflict.

Each moment with our child is a reflection of the past and a foundation for the future.

It’s the dynamic that arises from insisting on our paren- tal agenda that creates the need for discipline.

When it comes to accepting ourselves as imperfect, we set the tone for our children. The degree to which they accept their imperfections tends to be the degree to which we accept and honor our own.

To be present for our children means to be aware of our own subconscious agenda so we don’t impose this on our children.

If a parent puts out the kind of vibes that welcome feel- ings, even when the feelings are difficult to tolerate, the child picks up on this, eventually learning how to manage their feelings in a healthy manner.

There are all kinds of ways we can help our children cope with their world. Creativity is what’s needed, not admonish- ment or discipline.

Our children didn’t come into the world to be our puppets. They came here to struggle, fumble, thrive, and enjoy—a journey for which they need our encouragement.

From the Inside Flap

Where did the belief come from that we need to discipline our children if they are to grow up into individuals who are well adjusted and who make something of their lives?
Out of Control reveals how the very discipline we impose to control behavior is in reality a major cause of bad behavior, disrespect for adults, and dysfunction such as bullying, hostility toward family and society, drugs, alcoholism, and teen suicide.
Dr Tsabary asserts that to parent effectively requires us to develop a deep connection with our children, so that we address the feelings that drive a child s behavior instead of punishing. When we tackle the reason for the behavior, says Dr Tsabary, it automatically changes.
Far from a laissez-faire, anything goes approach, Dr Tsabary advocates for a high level of parental resolve that majors not in control, but in helping a child develop a sense of personal responsibility.
Authentic connection, in which children can be real with their parents, leads to a home in which self-discipline prevails both for the child and the parent.
The need to impose our will on our children evaporates, leading to respect, ownership of one s life, and a strong character marked by a resilience that flows naturally from within.

Why You Need THIS Book Struggling Parent.
By Happy customer
I have read all of Dr. Shefali's books and am eagerly awaiting her third book coming out May 31st. This book came to me at a time I was struggling with my oldest child. Angry, impulsive, not listening. Then I was introduced to Dr. Shefali's work. And my life has been changed forever. Both as a person and a parent.

Her ideas will find you saying " is she for real?" If I don't discipline my children things will not only get worse, but I will lose any control I had. Rest assured struggling parent, this will not be the outcome. I am living proof. My children ages 7,5, and 3 are living proof. There is a better way. We continue to drink the parent Kool Aid that tells us we need to change our child. We need to be more strict, exercise more control to shape and mold our children. So they can essentially be the child we want, not the child entrusted to us. Notice how many times I said "we"? Meaning "I" not your child. Meaning your ego, your script. Not the one that your child entered this earth already possessing.

I have about a 1000 sticky notes tucked through out this book and 10,000 sentences underlined. I would leave sticky notes of these life changing insights for my husband in any place I knew he would see them. When I feel I am getting "out of control" I come back to this book and reread it. I find my groove again and my household is at peace once again.

I have since meet Dr.Shefali. If you have the chance to attend a speaking engagement of hers, do it! It will only enrich your life. And your children's.

I am in no way affiliated with Dr. Shefali other than a loyal reader, whose life has been changed for the better. I share her work with everyone I know and several other parents have experienced the same relief. Buy this book! Buy her two other books The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family. And prepare for your own transformation.

Better results from better parenting
By Ms Molesworth
Your children don't have to "out of control" for you to gain insight from this book. No parent will ever be perfect all the time but I much prefer co-creating a peaceful home where the child's feelings as well as the parents' are respected, to being the "bad child" police doling out random punishments when we feel violated or disrespected. I can't wait to read Dr. Tsabary's new book. "The Conscious Parent". She was featured this month on the Oprah show.

I would recommend this book to any and all of our open ...
By Jenna Henke
As a conscious and spiritual family, I was looking for some guidance of how to discipline our toddler. This book not only helped me realize how I influenced my daughter's behavior but it really was therapeutic in bringing back memories of my own childhood and coming to a place of healing and understanding for the way my parents disciplined me. It surfaced a lot of feelings for me but helped heal them at the same time and by doing this, it really helped me recognize my parents struggles and the type of parent I want to be. I would recommend this book to any and all of our open minded friends who really want to work on themselves as parents.

The Real Story of Stone Soup, by Ying Chang Compestine

A stingy fisherman always makes his three young helpers do all his work. One day he scolds the “lazy boys” for forgetting to provide lunch. “Don’t worry,” they say. “We can make stone soup.” The boys dig a hole and fill it with water and “flavored” stones. They trick the fisherman into making bowls and chopsticks, and fetching salt and sesame oil. While he’s busy, they stir in bird eggs, add wild vegetables, and slip fish into the soup. By the time the old man returns, they have a feast fit for a king. To this day, “Egg Drop Stone Soup” is a traditional dish in southeast China. A recipe is included.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3—Tongue-in-cheek humor peppers this original tale that incorporates the stone-soup motif but is based on a Chinese legend instead of the European folktale. A fisherman complains that the three boys he has hired to work on his boat are "somewhat stupid" and "lazy" even though the illustration reveals that he is lounging at the stern while the boys toil. At lunchtime he barks out orders, "Ting! Gather firewood. Pong! Prepare the cooking pot and clean the fish." The cooking pot is missing, however. Undaunted, the young lads dig a hole in the sand for cooking and throw a "fish stone," an "egg stone," and a "vegetable stone" into a nearby fire. They distract their employer by asking him to make bamboo bowls and chopsticks while they add the real ingredients to the sand pot. When the rocks are added to the soup, the food floats to the surface. The unpleasant employer then claims that he can make soup from stones, but it is clear from the illustrations that the villagers know he's been fooled. The watercolors are in eye-catching shades of blue, green, and yellow, and are filled with motion and humor: a monkey imitates the jaunty walk of the fisherman, and pen-and-ink drawings meticulously detail whiskers and hair. However, the boys' faces appear stereotypically round, with slanted eyes that seem exaggerated. An additional purchase.—Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA

From Booklist
"The truth is that Stone Soup was invented . . . in China," writes Compestine, and in her version of the traditional folktale, a Chinese fisherman narrates. He complains about his young helpers: "Nice boys, but lazy and, I'm sorry to say, somewhat stupid." Jorisch's illustrations--expressive, gouache-and-ink scenes--tell a different story, though. Images show the rotund fisherman relaxing on his boat while the children do the work. For lunch one day, the resourceful boys make a soup, tricking their boss into believing it is river stones that create the flavor. The pompous boss returns to the village, boasting about his new discovery. Children who don't look closely at the pictures may have trouble following the action, but alert kids will chortle over the contradictory stories told by the words and images, and recognize the self-important adult who is oblivious to the kids' ingenuity. A recipe for Egg Drop Stone Soup is appended to this natural choice for folktale units. An author's note explains the story's cultural history but doesn't include a source. Gillian Engberg

Review
“A natural choice for folktale units.”—Booklist

“Jorisch’s bright watercolors cleverly extend the story, which, with dashes of humor and delightfulclassroom extensions, should satisfy kids and teachers alike.”—Kirkus Reviews

The best, funniest, and most challenging Stone Soup for older students
By Athene
I use folk tales with my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade English Language Learners. One of our projects is to read all the versions of STONE SOUP to examine the perspectives of the characters and the message(s) of the various tales. My students always love Pete Seeger's retelling of the tale: Some Friends to Feed (with its CD of Pete's own retelling and a song to sing about Friends to Feed.) They love the tale for Pete's voice, his song, and because the townspeople are hungry...but they are NOT STINGY. This is the best version for the youngest children, too. The version my students always love the best, however, is The "Real" Story of Stone Soup by Ying Chang Compestine. It is a sophisticated story filled with irony and intellectually the most challenging of all versions. It is also, by far, the funniest. Homeschooling mom has problems with the bad language used by the first person narrator. Her problem, I think, might have more to do with the age of her children: it is not really intended to be comprehensible by very young children. The world experience, the subtlety of human relationships, and the complexity of literary device makes it the most challenging and the most fun of all Stone Soups, for age 9 and up (to and including adults). I had to write this review because Amazon's one-star ranking is unfair to the book and might dissuade teachers and older students from experiencing a fine book offering a rigorous academic experience. Go for it! (Especially if your students are Chinese, as mine are. It's a joy!)

You'll love this book if you have a sense of humor ; )

I don't know why anyone would talk smack about a book as good as this. My 5th grade class loved it! I guess there are some words that really uptight people would dislike, like "stupid" but it really didn't affect us. I hate to break it to the world but you hear a lot worse words in public schools. I found the way the boys get back at the lazy fisherman is really original and hilarious. The artwork is awesome as well. This book is one of my favorites, and I'd reccommend it to anyone!
