There was a time when MTV was must-see television. There had never been programming dedicated to broadcasting music videos continuously throughout the day. In the 1980s, teens across the U.S. anxiously gathered around their cathode-ray televisions daily to "see" the latest music and all that it entailed: fashion, attitude, messages, etc.
This book meticulously describes via an extensive oral history the near-grassroots beginnings of the channel and how it grew over time to become a billion-dollar brand. Almost every living person who played an integral part in its rise (and ultimately, its demise if you're talking about its video-playing glory days), including executives, VJs, managers, producers, artists, video directors, and more, were interviewed for the book.
With literally hundreds of people interviewed, the authors took great care to seamlessly integrate them so the reader has a coherent story to read that is easy to comprehend and follow.
This book should be required reading for people who grew up with the channel, or DVR music video blocks on VH1 Classic, or want to understand how one channel practically single-handedly influenced pop culture to such a degree that folks still pine for those days, all these years later.
I highly recommend this book. It was a fascinating read, and I enjoyed learning about the inner workings of such an important part of my youth.
