Essential reading for the professional translator

The author, Mordecai Schreiber, more familiarly known by his pen name, Morry Sofer, must be commended for so willingly sharing the wealth of experience he has acquired over the years as a professional translator and founder of a successful translation company, Schreiber Translations Inc., which maintains a pool of over 1,300 freelance translators and interpreters. The 2013 edition of the Global Translator's Handbook is the eighth edition of the original Handbook, which has been updated every two or three years. It contains a wealth of resources for in-house and freelance translators alike. Freelancers will no doubt find most useful the extensive listings of sources of translation work and dictionaries, reference literature and terminology management, while those contemplating a career in translation would benefit from the useful advice given in the section on translation techniques and from the list of universities throughout the United States that offer training in translation. The historical overview of translation would be of interest to all readers, including in-house professionals, as would the updated chapter on how digital technology and the Internet are changing the profession. Written in an engaging and conversational style, this is a work to which you will return again and again not only as a source of reference but also, if need be, to restore your optimism about the inherent dignity and worth of translation as a profession.
