Newly expanded - now includes epilogue!
Andy Blom is an unpaid winter intern at The Ashe Sentinel, and right away he gets saddled with an “evergreen” – otherwise known as a boring feature that can run anytime over the holiday season. To his dismay, he’s assigned to write about a construction worker who creates metal art. The story wouldn’t be so bad, but he’s uneasy about meeting a macho guy who will no doubt find Andy just a little too … gay. Even if he is in the (fairly transparent) closet. But as it turns out, Lane Cross isn’t what he expects. In fact, Lane is a man of many contradictions, not the least of which is that a man like him could want Andy.
Lane Cross works construction to pay the bills, and makes metal art to … also pay the bills. As a single dad, the enjoyment of his art has taken a backseat to making ends meet. And his love life has taken a back seat to caring for his son, especially when Zach, age 6, sabotages every baby-sitting attempt Lane makes.
Then Lane meets Andy Blom. The man’s Swedish name meaning bloom is perfect for him: Andy is refreshingly sweet and vibrant – even if he gets a bit thorny at any hint that he’s anything but strong and self-reliant. And Zach loves him, which only intensifies the attraction. But when Lane moves too fast, will he scare away the surprisingly innocent young man – or will Andy’s journalistic ethics end them before they ever begin?
"Winter Blom," a holiday novella, is the fourth book in the Ashe Sentinel series. There are very minor spoilers if you read it before the others. However, it can be read as a stand-alone.

Frustrating characters (SPOILERS)
By Lora905
I have read the 3 previous books in this series, and while each one may have had a few quirks I wasn't too keen on, I can confidently say that I liked this one the least. Or at least the characters. Andy would go from shy, to easily irritated by half of everything Lane does or says, to wanting to take things slow, to talking dirty by phone and wanting to touch & make out. And I have a question about the conflict in the story: Andy bought Zach a brand new Winnie the Pooh book from the mall. Pooh books (Pooh anything) can be a bit pricey. Andy was an unpaid intern. Did it really make sense for him to buy this gift for a kid he'd just met, when he himself had been eating PB&J for days in a row? As for Lane, I was very confused by his work schedule, as I have never heard of a construction worker having such odd working hours, often needing to go in during the evenings and/or at a moment's notice. He was constantly having to get babysitters for his 6 year old son. Was it not possible to request daytime only hours to coincide with his son going to school? And speaking of which, at 6 years old, you have to be in school. Why was this kid never doing any homework, but instead constantly playing videogames? And then couldn't even read an easy name on a gift tag? And when Lane needed to talk to Andy, he'd just tell his son to go watch TV.
Lane said it never occurred to him that his son could still be grieving. I could see that. But the fact that he allowed this kid to do whatever, whenever, with no punishment or retribution, there's no excuse for that. The kid talked back not only to babysitters, but to Lane & Andy as well, even raising his voice. When Andy slept on the couch, Zach climbed up and sat on him (and he knew!), watching TV and eating cereal. And the increasing violence and anger (he shoved 1 babysitter & screamed at her, the next time he picked up a shovel and bust a window) was a mess. Apparently his mother seemed to suffer from a possibly undiagnosed mental health problem - based on conversation in the book - perhaps this was the issue with Zach. Maybe his behavior wasn't his fault, but at 6 years old always getting his way was not the way to handle it. What I didn't really like about Lane was that he seemed desperate (calling coworkers to get Andy's address, popping up at his apartment, popping up at his job) and jealous (constantly asking who his roommate was, asking who he was at the bar with). Keep in mind that from beginning to end, including sleeping together, announcing their relationship to Zach, and exchanging "I love you's" all happened in a span of 2-3 weeks. His behavior didn't come off as romantic, it came off as possessive. A couple of characters from previous books make an appearance (Was Cat always that obnoxious? Why is Archer still dating other people when he has a BF now?). I liked them more than the MCs of this story.

Love is in "BLOM"
By AngelWTattoos
This is the 4th installment in DJ Jamison's Ashe Sentinel Connections series. She has built a world filled with unique and very likable characters and this book is no exception.
Andy Blom is a 20 year old college student doing an unpaid internship at the Sentinel for his college degree. He is asked to do an "evergreen piece" on a local metal artist, Lane Cross. When he arrives, he is startled to see that the man is crafting a daffodil out of metal and Andy is shocked to find that he is very intrigued by the man for more than just his artistic creations.
As they see one another more often for the article, the fact that Lane was married, his wife died and he has a young son to care for by himself comes out and the completely inexperienced Andy is slightly overwhelmed by the feelings he begins to have for both the father and the son.
I loved how the author brought out the fact that the young son, Zach, was acting out with all the babysitters that his father, Lane had hired at various times and liked her even better for the reasons she gave as to why he might not welcome these women into his life.
I do not want to spoil anything by saying more, but this book is a wonderful read, touching on the very real pain and loss of a death of a loved one and it is handled perfectly. DJ Jamison has a new fan in this reader.

Sweet with a thorn or two.
By Patricia Nelson
For most people, Christmas is a time of happiness and celebration with friends and loved ones, but for Andy, Lane, and Lane's son Zach, it's sad and bittersweet. Andy lost his mom to illness, and Lane lost his wife, and Zach his mother when she took her own life. Andy meets Lane when he interviews him for the newspaper. There's an instant attraction between the two men, but prickly issues keep them apart at first. I really enjoyed watching the sweet relationship grow between Andy and Lane, and got a good laugh when I figured out where the title came from. Give this gem a try for yourself.
