Algebra is a discipline that is much more than numbers, variables, and their manipulation. There are also the environments which gave rise to it, the efforts of civilizations to understand, measure, and compute quantities relevant and indeed essential to their existence. The development of number systems is one of the basic aspects, the rules for manipulating them is another, and the solutions of equations of different sorts is a third. The Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, Islamic, and Mayan civilizations each wrestled with these agendas, reaching different levels of understanding, and developing different computational practices and tools. At this point, an enriching transformation has occurred: what appear to be merely abstract procedures with goal to deliver numerical answers, now become connected to the fabrics of different cultures and their developments.
