Hemant Kumar Mehta

Hemant Kumar Mehta is a distributed and scientific computing enthusiast. He has more than 13 years of experience of teaching, research, and software development. He received his BSc (in computer science) Hons., master of computer applications degree, and PhD in computer science from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, India in 1998, 2001, and 2011, respectively. He has experience of working in diverse international environments as a software developer in MNCs. He is a post-doctorate fellow at an international university of high reputation. Hemant has published more than 20 highly cited research papers in reputed national and international conferences and journals sponsored by ACM, IEEE, and Springer. He is the author of Getting Started with Oracle Public Cloud, Packt Publishing. He is also the coauthor of a book named Internet and Web Technology, published by Kaushal Prakashan Mandir, Indore. He earned his PhD in the field of cloud computing and big data. Hemant is a member of ACM (Special Interest Group on High-performance Computing Education: SIGHPC-Edu), senior member of IEEE (the computer society, STC on cloud computing, and the big data technical committee), and a senior member of IACSIT, IAENG, and MIR Labs.

Some useful content but more depth required

Rather than 'mastering', this book is really a fairly advanced introduction to core Python scientific libraries. A number of topics are covered, in addition to the de facto standard of NumPy, SciPy, iPython and Matplotlib. There is no mention of SciKit-Learn and Pandas is introduced in just 14
pages. However, there are a few chapters with some really interesting content, and here is where the book could shine. Chapter 6 introduces SymPy applications for mathematical computing, and these could almost warrant a stand-alone book if the material was expanded; as it is, the content is disappointing. SymPy is introduced in less than ten pages, but the scientific examples are literally just a page of code with no discussion or comments other than a terse introduction. If it was assumed, as it seems to be, that the reader is very familiar with the second quantisation of the 1-D quantum harmonic oscillator, then surely there is little point in presenting a block of code when a search for documentation would be easier? Chapter 8, on 'Parallel and Large-Scale Scientific Computing' is much better and richer in useful content.

Overall I wanted to like the book but the content is rather patchy: lacking in some places and rather undeveloped. Really, the book could do with much more detail in some sections as they honestly feel lightweight, and this is a shame as there are some topics here which are not covered in many other books. More depth would be needed to fully recommend this title.

Highly Recommend

This book has huge potential, and like a few of the fellow reviewers I also agree that it could have used a lot more discussion in a few of the advanced areas. However, since the bulk of this book delivers on Scientific Computing I was really satisfied overall with the book. The real-life case studies and best practices were what sealed the deal for me. The previous 8 chapters are great, but Chapter 10 made me feel like I accomplished something, while also ending with friendly reminders or gotcha's. Security is something that you don't find covered in most programming books, but this book did indeed offer some guidance on it in Chapter 10. I guess I really enjoyed the final chapter a lot, but this book is something I'll have to read over a few dozen times to allow the deep technical aspects sink into my cranium a lot more.

Not much depth unfortunately and no mastery

I had high hopes for this book as there aren't a lot of solid resources for using Python for scientific computing. Unfortunately in the end the author tried to cover too much and as a result the information is very surface level with insufficient depth to be useful in most cases, no "mastery" will be gained from it. There are a few gems (hence the 3 stars) and the book does an okay job of covering the topics germane to scientific computing so is useful for those looking to understand the options at a high level. I find that more specific books on topics like NumPy, pandas, and SciPy are far more useful for mastering than the simple treatment they are given here.

A good study in Prophecy.

This book is very good and very deep about prophecy and the coming apocalypse. Read the book Zechariah in the Bible first then have it near by to refer to as you read Zechariah: Israel's Prophetic Future and the Coming Apocalypse. This book will take you to many places in the Bible especially other books of prophecy. It is very informative and encouraging. Those who know God will certainly go to glory and those who don't will not. It is time for a decision. It is time to know what is really coming.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. IT IS WRITTEN WITH A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE AND CAREFULLY EXPLAIN VERSE BY VERSE EVEN DIFFICULT PASSAGES.

Anger management at its best

I got this book specifically because Gary Chapman, a Christian therapist and author, wrote it. His book The Five Love Languages has been an inspiration to many couples seeking a way to make their spouse feel loved and to also make the reader aware of what makes him/her feel loved. His Anger book has left me where I can start managing my anger instead of stuffing it down inside. Funny how in the Bible, God and Christ express anger - but we're told as Christians that it's not a "good" emotion and we should "turn the other cheek". There is a time and a place for everything. If you're angry, then do what you have to in order to come to terms with that anger and deal with it in a healthy way, not the way most of us were taught as kids. The lessons in this book are the groundwork for a healthy life, in whatever circumstances you find yourself. As with any book, read the full description, as it will clue you in as to what the author's motivation is. Chapman is a relationship therapist and his work is phenomenal. He's also a Christian and teaches how to deal with anger in a healthy way, instead of holding it inside until you are ill or you just totally lose it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a way to express anger in a healthy, constructive way. Too often, we use our anger to hurt others. This book, although based on Biblical teaching, can offer something to anyone who wants to stop the anger cycle and repair the relationships with those around them.

Great Book on Anger

This was the first Gary Chapman book that I read. It is wonderful to say the least. It gives very effective tools for managing anger in a positive and healthy manner. The book also helps you to first locate the source of the anger and act accordingly. I think that this book is useful for everyone, even if they don't have an anger "issue". I am now hooked on Gary Chapman and plan to continue to read his books. On another note, yes his books are Christian based, but don't let that stop you from getting some great tools and information to better your life.

Another great book in the Nightfall series

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed hearing Zorin part of the story. It helped me to understand him and his choices. It was nice to learn more about his past and lost love. You got to see how his past helped define him. I look forward to seeing more of him in the next book.

A great novella for fans of this series!

Night of Nyx is the first novella in the Nightfall Chronicles. The events in the novella take place during those of the first half of House of Ravens. It's mainly told via Zorin's point of view, however some chapters are from Varian's point of view. Rather than seem redundant, Night of Nyx helps readers understand Zorin's character more. Varian's motives also seem a lot clearer, transforming his role significantly from that of the villian we saw him as in House of Ravens to that of a misunderstood hero.

Very little is left to desire in this novella. The story is fast-paced, informative, and an appropriate length for the amount of content being delivered.

I'd recommend Night of Nyx to fans of the Nightfall Chronicles and fans of science fiction, adventure, fantasy, and dystopian stories. It is appropriate for young teens, but does contain some graphic descriptions of violence.

Overall, I loved this glimpse into Zorin's soul. His actions and reactions make so much more sense to me now. He's much more likeable a character than I had imagined. Varian's character was the most changed for me, however. I couldn't help seeing the bad guy he made himself out to be, but now I know why for the most part, and that has truly reshaped him. I'm truly pleased with this novella and I can't wait for the next book.

This small novella is a perfect companion to the Nightfall Chronicles and for those who want to get to know Zorin more! The authors wrote a nice insight to the thoughts of Zorin, and also his reasons for helping both Scarlett and Nightfall. Pllus, I loved how the authors included the point of view of King Varian! It created this excitement that is making me crave the next book in the series! Personally, this is one of the best novellas I have read on the content of further character insight.

Delany, who's best known for his science fiction (Nova, Dhalgren) takes a variety of literary turns in these three novellas that chronicle the experience of the African American writer in the 20th century. The longest story, "Atlantis: Model 1924," focuses on the impressions of a 17-year-old African American who travels from North Carolina to New York to join his family. Using a mysterious unnamed character who vanishes from a rowboat beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, Delany draws a variety of parallels between the mythic aspects of the Big Apple and the legendary city under the sea, framing the young man's perspective against the achievements of such early 20th-century black luminaries as Paul Robeson, Hart Crane and Jean Toomer. In "Erik, Gwen, and D.H. Lawrence's Esthetic of Unrectified Feeling," Delany paints a portrait of the black artist as a young man, musing on the use of music lessons, art classes and New York private schools to help instill and sustain the instinct to create. "Citre et Trans" leans more heavily on plot and narrative and deals, albeit with more style and seriousness, with some of the themes of the author's recently published Hogg. Here, a bisexual African American writer, living in Greece in the mid-1960s, must confront the emotional effects of rape after his roommate picks up a pair of Greek sailors. Balanced and full of intricate layers of prose, these novellas present a potpourri of literary references, detailed flashbacks and experimental page layouts. Delany seamlessly meshes graceful prose, cultural and philosophical depth and a knowledge of different forms and voices into a truly heady, literate blend.

Although Delany is best known for science fiction (e.g., Flight from Neveryon, Classic Returns, LJ 3/15/94), the tales in this collection evoke the past. In "Atlantis: Model 1924" a young African American travels from North Carolina to New York City and revels in the richness of his new environment. "Erik, Gwen, and D.H. Lawrence's Esthetic of Unrectified Feeling" portrays a boy's education at the hands of a formalist art teacher and a farm hand who elevates profanity to an art form. "Citre et Trans" examines the lingering effects of homosexuual rape. Because of race, sexual orientation, keen aesthetic sensibility, or all of the above, Delany's protagonists are unique. Consequently, his stories focus less on external action than on changes in a character's consciousness. All three tales are elegantly wrought, but Delany's frequent experiments with split text in "Atlantis: Model 1924" frequently distract rather than enrich the narrative. Over the course of a stellar 30-year career, Delany has built a reputation as one of the preeminent literary stylists of science fiction largely on the basis of his penchant for groundbreaking experimentalism. These three semiautobiographical reflections, though they show Delany's consummate craftsmanship intact, find him stepping away from his literary roots. "Atlantis: Model 1924," the first and longest, uses third-person narration and often parallel columns of text to explore the adolescent memories of a 1920s version of Delany in his native New York and the poetic stranger he meets one day on the Brooklyn Bridge. The second poetically explores the author's formative artistic influences, among them an eccentric art teacher, and the last recalls brief erotic adventures in Greece. Just how much is autobiography, how much fiction, readers may determine by turning to Delany's elegiac autobiography, The Motion of Light in Water (1993). Carl Hays

The Extended Sam

Delany once again has delivered something new and different with these three tales of different Sams.
The first story, Atlantis: Model 1924 deals with a teenage Sam coming to New York for the first time in 1924 and details his early experiences and impressions of this modern stand-in for Atlantis (note that Delany was born in 1942). Rife with metaphor and allegory, and told using some post-modern literary techniques including multiple story lines on the same page and marginalized notes, the defining point of this story is Sam's first trip across the Brooklyn Bridge, and the poet/writer he meets there (who is possibly an older version of Sam himself?). While not an easy story to read due to its structure, by the end of the story all the various story threads, notes, observations, and characters come together in a defining moment of epiphany.
The second story time shifts us to the early fifties, where a middle-school age Sam is introduced to the world of music and art in what was, for that time, a very progressive school. His portrait of what art really is, how its definition has changed, and its importance to himself and to the world is neatly balanced by this Sam's early introduction into the vagaries of sex. Some fine, if brief, character portraits round out this quiet story.
The last story deals with a Sam in his early twenties in Greece, and is probably the most factually based of the three stories, given that he has mentioned some of the incidents of this story in several of his other works. It is a very dark and depressing story, and details a homosexual rape and the necessity for one of Sam's lady friends to kill her dog. Some very rough material here that may not be to everyone's taste, but delivered with Delany's typical fine sense of language, pacing, and character.
All three tales have much to offer, each in completely different ways, and each presents a different 'side' of Sam. How much is autobiographical, how much is pure fiction is almost impossible to define, but the reader will finish this book with a better understanding of not just Delany but also the entire world and the social interactions that help define what it is to be human.

I read this book on the recommendation of Michael Cunningham (The Hours), who said, "If Samual Delany were writing in the same innovative, intelligent way and his books were not science fiction, he'd be know to every serious reader and not just a relatively small band of us."
