A Good Way To Get the Scope of Religions in America

I had to read this book for a Religious Studies course, and I have to say, it was a good read. There was extensive research behind it, and Albanese condensed the beliefs of religions to a couple pages. It was very informative. Studying this book, I learned a lot about various religions in America and how they all stem from basic core beliefs of the three major religions: Christianity, Catholicism, and Judaism. The most important thing to learn about the many religions in America is that they create the oneness of America.

The only thing I did not like about this book was that my religion seemed a little off. However, its interpretation is coming from an unbiased scholarly view. It's hard sometimes to read things objectively when you know a lot about your religion! Nevertheless, Albanese was just offering a general description.

An interesting read and very helpful for Religious Studies majors!

Very good and informative resource to have if you want to fish or boat on unfamiliar lakes

Like many, I tend to fish/boat on the same lakes all the time because they are familiar and it is always a hassle to find boat launches/access points on the lakes. Also got tired of trying to find access info and lake bottom maps on the web with so many duplicate Lake names in Wisconsin. This book solved these problems. Lakes are listed alphabetical and by county. There is a book like this for each "Zone" in the state. (Coverage is indicated on front cover). TONS of info about each lake. too much to list all here. All lake access points are shown. Lake bottom maps indicate depths, structures, weed types, bottom type. Also lists species, bait to use, boat launches/access points and whether they are private or state/federal launches. Written mostly by those that fished the lake, live or own property around each lake. There is also info with regards to Wisconsin DNR specie sampling results by year that is very useful to determine fishing pressure. Gives you the confidence to try different lakes. For the most part, very accurate info. I didn't give it 5 stars because it just so happens this is an older edition and the inside pages are plain paper and susceptible to water damage (Cover is water resistant). What dates the older editions seems to be just the DNR sampling years and maybe new boat launch/access points. Newer book has latest sampling year info too. For those bringing it on boats the have no shelter from the weather make sure to keep it in a sealed plastic bag. Still find this edition VERY handy and informative and would recommend this book or series of this book. Well worth the price. Would not go on an unfamiliar lake without it!

The Godly Play Program

It's about Christian education for children but Jerome Berryman calls his new book The Spiritual Guidance of Children. Published by Morehouse and available at [...], Berryman starts with early history of providing Christian education for children, both in the U.K. and the U.S., from the 1780s and onward.
An alternative program for children's spiritual quest and guidance was begun in Rome in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori. She believed that children are "inherently spiritual," and her teachers were trained to guide children in their spirituality. The assumption was that children have an inner faith from their beginning and they should be supported life long on their journey toward spiritual maturity. Sometimes when little children respond to something new or beautiful in nature, we see on their faces that they believe and they want to know more.
A prominent name in this history of children's spiritual education is Sofia Cavalletti of Rome, author of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program and its teachings, plans, and helpful books, published in the 1960s and 70s.
In the U.S. in the 1970s and on, Jerome and Thea Berryman began planning, producing, experimenting with the possibilities for a new program to be called Godly Play. They tested it in their Episcopal community, where it began to spread and is now quite ecumenical. The last chapter here provides information on ten examples of Godly Play as it is being used and diffused into the mainstream of Christian education around the world.

How 'Religious' Can Also Be 'Spiritual' - Our Children Are Doing It

This book will be a 'must have' for every Christian educator, describing Godly Play beautifully but more importantly, describing what the spiritual guidance of children must be about. (And doing it in language that is accessible.) Two sentences popped out for me, and this is just in the preface: "One needs to know the art of speaking Christian language well to know the art of living well."
and "How does Godly Play feel and why is that important?"
This book answers questions, gives a fabulous history of Christian 'education' and helps us see our way to the spiritual formation of children and adults alike using this revolutionary 'way' we call Godly Play. It also gives us thoughtful ideas for moving into the future. Thank you, Jerome Berryman, for all of your good work. I plan to recommend this book to parents, clergy -well, everyone!

Excellent book for those who love and work with children in churches or families.

Berryman gives a clear history of the development of the Godly Play methodology as it grew out of Montessori educational practice and theory. Those who have some familiarity with the "nuts and bolts" of a Godly Play program will especially appreciate an outline of its history and the theology of childhood that supports the design of the program.

An evocative and clear book that simplifies a complex topic

The authors write with precision and clarity. They explicate a complex topic systematically and render theoretical constructs immediately useful. Numerous clinical examples add clarity and life to the theoretical aspects of their presentation. This book is readable by practicing clinicians and by the interested non-professional. As a post-graduate lecturer and psychoanalytic supervisor, I have found this book to be an excellent introduction to Kohut's Self Psychology primarily due to the authors' ability to hold the readers interest, to make difficult concepts clear, and to stay close to Kohut's the original ideas. This book is also useful as a refesher for experienced practitioners and as a good prerequisite for more more advanced and / or specialized study.

Authors not competent in Kohut's Self Psychology.

I've read all of Kohut's work and I know that the grandiose self ,at least according to Kohut, isn't a reaction to an imperfect parent which is repeated in therapy and nor is the idealized parental imago. Both are primary structures of the nuclear self and not reactions to lack of control and disappointment as these authors sometimes claim .
I don't believe either of these authors have actually read Kohut's books,or at least if they have they haven't understood them. Instead I suspect their education in Kohut's self psychology has been mediated through the teachings of Kohutians. Kohut wasn't a great writer. His sentences are overly long and run on and difficult to read but his work should be read in the original. If not then the reader is likely to get the distorted and inaccurate view as exemplified by this book. The only accurate reliable books on Kohut that I have come across so far are Alan Siegal's 'Heinz Kohut And The Psychology Of The Self', Philip Rubovitz-Seitz's ' Kohut's Freudian Vision' and Ernest Wolf's 'Treating The Self'. The rest of the Kohutian books I have come across have been like this book written by people who aren't really competent to write them. What I find difficult to understand is the positive reviews that this book got from reliable writers like Ernest Wolf who gave it a positive forward.
