Art Critiques: A Guide. Third Definitive Edition Revised and Expanded, by James Elkins

This is a guidebook for art students at the college level (BA, BFA, MFA, PhD). Compared to other books on critique, this book is more colorful, more engaging, and less formal. "James Elkins is one of the world's leading educators in the visual arts. In Art Critiques: A Guide, Elkins shines his bright light across the long overlooked shadowland of studio education. Beautifully written and easy to use, this book is an absolute must for art students and faculty alike."-George Smith, Founder & President, Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. "Elkins introduces refreshing commonsense in the tired and tiresome activity of the critique of art works by students. A dissection geared to avoid or delay a future autopsy of the field, the book uses case studies that teach as much about "how to" as they do about 'how not to.' A nice and often funny exercise in debunking, Art Critiques: A Guide is also a fascinating analysis of the successes and failures in communication among people."-Luis Camnitzer, Professor Emeritus, State University of New York, and Pedagogical Advisor to the Cisneros Foundation.

From the Author
This is the third, final, and definitive edition of this book: I will not be expanding it further, so it's a safe book to buy. Previous editions have been available in less expensive black and white versions, but this time I decided color really does make a difference, so there is no black and white option. The cover was painted especially for this book by Mark Staff Brandl.About 10 chapters are expanded from chapter 4 in my book Why Art Cannot be Taught: A Handbook for Art Students, but this book is not just an extract from that one. I have worked hard on this book: everything's been reorganized, and lots has been rewritten; lots of material is crowd sourced from Facebook; and this edition also adds five new chapters that weren't in the second edition--2, 5, 7, 10, and 43. It's as good as I can make it. I hope you find it useful.

Disappointing start
By Richard
I'm still just a fifth of the way in. The book initially rambles on and is reparative on meaningless points and then it skims over some important parts, which are not explained in enough detail to get a proper grasp. Disappointing, as this is making me lose interest rather than be keen to continue. I'm sure it will get better, but just haven't got there yet.

An Excellent Resource For Those Learning Ableton
By A. Washington
I love the simplicity and the clarity with which the content is presented. The written and visual (pictures) make this book very easy to learn from. The content has some significant depth to it but is also excellent for beginners. This book does not replace the manual but in term of practical knowledge and application it's A-1. For beginners I suggest a slowly paced journey through the book from start to finish. Not rushing and enjoying and digesting what is explored in this book will help you move slowly but deliberately to mastery of this very powerful DAW. If your not a newbie then cherry picking what you want to focus and learn is great also.

From the Inside Flap
In All the Things You Are, award-winning author David Evanier offers an intimate and unvarnished portrait of one of the most beloved singers of all time. Among America's greatest entertainers, from Garland to Sinatra, Tony Bennett alone is still here and at the top of his game. He has led an amazing life. At age ten, he stood beside Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia at the dedication of New York City's Triboro Bridge and, leading the throng of people across it, sang "Marching Along Together." He fought in World War II and helped liberate a Nazi concentration camp. He was discovered by Pearl Bailey and Bob Hope. In the 1960s, he marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, and several of his paintings are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. And, of course, he sings, too.

Evanier probes deeply into the life and career of a genuine living legend. Drawing upon interviews with scores of Tony's friends, family members, and fellow musicians, as well as experts on the last fifty years of music, he vividly captures the musical history of an era. He brings deep insight into a man who has stayed perennially young because of his devotion to his art and to humanity. Friends speak affectionately of how Tony would rebuke them when they said that Tony was a better singer than his idol, Frank Sinatra. One friend tells how the singer's brief unannounced appearances at small music clubs lifted the hearts of mourning New Yorkers after 9/11. Another describes Tony's repeated visits to listen to and sing with his former music teacher during the last year of the teacher's life.

Evanier recounts Tony's impoverished yet happy childhood in Depression-era Astoria, Queens, and re-creates the heady early years of his career, as he produced one great hit record after another. He examines Tony's bleakest years, during the 1970s, when the singer struggled with addiction, a difficult second marriage, and evaporating interest in the Great American Songbook he loved to sing. Evanier also reveals the pivotal role Tony's children played in helping him relaunch his career by becoming popular music's ambassador to new generations of listeners. Today he is a musical statesman, America's troubadour, style model, mentor, and the unmatched interpreter of the greatest American composers of popular music, from Gershwin to Berlin to Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter.

All the Things You Are is a story that includes some of the foremost personalities of the past sixty years: Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Duke Ellington, Bob Hope, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Jimmy Durante, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, and many more.

Complete with candid assessments of Tony Bennett's life and career by the likes of legendary radio personality Jonathan Schwartz and the Wall Street Journal's Terry Teachout, All the Things You Are is a masterful, groundbreaking biography and must reading for anyone who has heard that voice and fallen in love with the artist behind it.

From the Back Cover
The first complete biography of singing legend Tony Bennett

"David Evanier's All the Things You Are is a work of profound empathy and musical understanding. Tony Bennett lives in these pages as a matchlessly joyous singer whose brilliance refracts from a deep and subtle soul."
—James Kaplan, author of Frank: The Voice

"Much as Tony Bennett's music is appreciated, so will be this insightful book about the man behind the music."
—Gay Talese

"Like the American songbook, Tony Bennett is indestructible. He has become the greatest champion of classic songs and thanks to his interpretation of them, they will go on and on. All the Things You Are is a stylishly written book that mirrors its subject. David Evanier has great knowledge and depth of understanding of Tony Bennett and his legacy. This is a significant work of art."
—Michael Feinstein

"The great thing about David Evanier's biography—beyond its reliable research, nuanced evaluations, and stylistic eloquence—is that by looking closer at a great artist than the artist might have wished, it uncovers a man even more worthy of our admiration than we knew: a valiant defender of civil rights as well as the classic American songbook and the singer's right to enhance it by his own light."
—Gary Giddins, author of Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams and Warning Shadows

For my money, I'd still choose Bennett's autobiography "The Good Life" over this one...
By Agnes Andrea
I've read two books about Tony Bennett: "The Good Life" (his 1998
autobiography written with critic/journalist Will Friedwald); and "All
The Things You Are" (the 2011 biography by author David Evanier).

"The Good Life" is a warm, passionate life story brimming with
anecdotes only the man himself could tell (about his growing up in an
Italian-American neighborhood, his WWII experience, his acquaintance
and friendship with some of the greatest artists in the showbiz for
the last 60 years or so). You can feel in every page Bennett's
positive, enthusiastic attitude towards life, his uncompromising love
for good music and good songs. Still, being a very private person, and
not so keen on dishing the dirt about himself (or about others: you
won't catch him talking badly about anyone, not even those who were an
obstacle to his career) in his memoir Bennett has the tendency to pass
by very quickly his personal (marital) problems and his professional
troubles: the 1976-1985 decade, possibly his darkest moment, is
hastily dealt with in about ten pages.

You might expect David Evanier's book ("All The Things You Are") to
provide more insight precisely about those aspects overlooked by
Bennett. And it does, just not as much as you'd expect.
One of Evanier's main sources is Derek Boulton, Bennett's manager
between 1970 and 1974. So you get lots of detail about those years, a
brief strech actually. Evanier also covers, of course, the last 13 or
so years since Bennett's memoir was published; and you get interesting
infos about how Bennett and his pianist of a lifetime, Ralph Sharon,
parted ways in 2002.
There are all new interviews, but Evanier seems to draw consistently from
Bennett's memoir itself, essentially following that blueprint, and
from other archive interviews.

As stated by other reviewers, in Evanier's book there are a few
repetitions, inaccuracies and misspelling (see also the excellent
reader's review by Bismaquer on Amazon UK) which suggest the book
could have used a better editing/revision.
The recording of the Rodgers&Hart songbook took place in 1973, not
1974; likewise, the famous Alice Tully Hall concerts were in 1973, not
1974, and 2nd guitarist on those occasions was not Bucky Pizzarelli,
who by then had left the Barnes/Braff group, but Wayne Wright.
Orchestrator Jorge Calandrelli occasionally becomes "Calendrelli"; in
one point the song "Where do you go from love" becomes "Where do you
go for love"... giving it an altogether... well... "different"
meaning... And so on.
One thing that doesn't seem very professional to me is throughout the
book the author refers to Bennett's ex-wives (Patricia and Sandra)
using the nicknames given them by some of Bennett's closest associates
("Sandy One" and "Sandy Two"). That's okay, of course, if you're
quoting somebody's words; but it's rather odd to see a biographer
using nicknames directly himself, and out of quotation. By the way,
while the author writes at lenght about Bennett's ex-wives, neither
seems to have a say or to have been contacted for their version.

All considered, if Evanier proves anything, is that Bennett's memoir
was a fair and honest account of his own life; so if I was to choose
only one book about Bennett I'd pick his autobiography "The Good
Life": a satisfying, informative overview of Bennett's life, written
by the person who knows the matter best - the old man himself.

This is a GREAT book about Tony Bennett by David Evanier
By Nick Riggio
Nicholas J. Riggio says:

I have been a lifelong Tony Bennett fan and friend since 1950. I have read the book by David Evanier and found it to be fascinating, factual, and well written. I sent David many old newspaper clippings from the 1950's. They were reviews of Tony's nightclub performances. I marveled how David introduced them into the story. I found the descriptions of so many great Bennett albums refreshing and honest! It is true that Tony Bennett has recorded many great songs and albums that received little to no air time by DJs on the radio. David brings them back to life with great detail.

This is a book that is hard to put down once you start reading it. It just flows from page to page and is very informative.

All The Things You Are: The Life of Tony Bennett is a must read! I want to thank David Evanier for writing a great book about my favorite singer and a great man Mr. Tony Bennett!

As the late , great Jimmy Roselli said" Tony has one of the warmest voices ever" and now there is a book that celebrates Tony's wonderful career with great skill, pride and love.

Great Book - One of it's kind
By Michael J. Fiorito
All The Things You Are is without a doubt the best book ever written on Tony Bennett. I've waited a long time for a book like this to come into print.

There's the book Bennett co-wrote with Will Friedwald. The Good Life: The Autobiography Of Tony Bennett, but it doesn't really say anything - it mainly reminds us that Bennett is a really nice guy. We already knew that.

What immediately comes across in Evanier's book is his fascination and affection for Italian-American crooners. You can tell that Evanier not only writes about the subject of crooners, but is also a huge fan. It's clear that no one put Evanier up to the task of writing this book. He had to write it. His enthusiasm and his easy to read writing style makes All The Things You Are a delectable treat. I think I read it in two days. It was so enjoyable I almost wanted to eat it afterwards.

As in his other books Evanier gets to the heart of Bennett. We see how Bennett surrounded himself with great musicians and insisted on recording quality material. Evanier writes that Bennett's musical style was informed first under the directorship of the innovative jazz guitarist, Chuck Wayne and then later under the pianist Ralph Sharon. Moving away from the crooner pop songs that made him famous, Bennett's used his success to evolve into one of the all-time great jazz singers.

I was surprised to learn about his failed marriages, struggles with addiction, and his (what?) volcanic temper. But at least we now know that Bennett is human. I was also surprised to learn that he'd often lash out against Ralph Sharon after concerts, wrongly accusing him of ruining performances. Of course, many of Bennett's most famous recordings have been made great by Sharon's tasteful and concise piano phrasing and overall musical vision.

This book will make you want to listen to Bennett's oeuvre: his work with Bill Evans, Count Basie, and countless other jazz legends. Not to mention that he's still recording with relevant artists.

But don't believe me; pick up the book and read it if you love the crooners as I do.

Review
"As with nearly every DK book I've ever read, this collection by Billy Wrecks and Danny Graydon (with a foreword by comics writing icon, Roger Stern) succeeds in being exhaustive yet condensed, providing the reader with access to just about everything that has touched Doctor StephenStrange's life since he became the Master of the Mystic Arts. Hardcoverwith gilt-edged pages (a nice touch!), this oversized book takes readers on an encyclopedic tour of Strange's origins, his allies, hisassociates, his enemies, and the notable turning points in his life.
"Each page is filled with artwork culled from the different decades of the publication of DOCTOR STRANGE. The clashing, divergent styles puttogether on the same page add to the notion that the world can be seenin differing ways through Strange's eyes, almost as if each era was awindow into a different dimension." -- RJ Carter

The saga of the Sorcerer Supreme...with one major flaw
By L. W. Swint
"I am known as Dr. Strange--Sorcerer Supreme of this material realm..."

'"Supreme"? Is then...no mortal magician stronger than you?"

"No..."

Doctor Strange and Lilia the Gypsy Queen.
Adapted from the story, "Portal to the Past," by Steve Englehart, Mike Friedrich, and Frank Brunner,
originally published in "Marvel Premiere" #12, 1973.

"The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a hardcover book offering an overview of the most unique Marvel Comics superhero, Doctor Steven Strange, "Master of the Mystic Arts!" It is the first time such a volume has been produced for the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and covers the length and breadth of his extraordinary exploits: from his early days as a former doctor of medicine, his spiritual resurrection as the prized pupil of the wise wizard revered as the Ancient One, to his contemporary status as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protector of the natural and the supernatural on our precious planet.

This lesser book of the Vishanti is divided into 7 chapters:

"Strange Magic:"
This introductory section of the book serves as an abridged biography of Steven Strange, providing brief glimpses into his amazing adventures as he came to become Earth's Mystic Master.

"Side by Side:"
At 44 pages, this is the longest chapter in the 176 paged book. While Doctor Strange's special title of Sorcerer Supreme causes him to be involved in magical missions only he can master, they bring him into contact not just with individuals of the supernatural worlds but also encounters with Earth's ever growing, ever evolving superhero community. Over time, the wizard of other realities came to build lasting relationships with many remarkable men and women. This chapter details the friends and allies Doctor Strange has gained in his career. They include: The Ancient One, the mystic mentor to Doctor Strange. Wong, the "manservant, confidant, and housekeeper" to the master mage's unique home, the Sanctum Sanctorum. Clea, Doctor Strange's great love, the beautiful sorceress from the Dark Dimension. Spider-man, an unlikely but recurring comrade in arms to the "Master of the Mystic Arts" in many an adventure. Doctor Doom, the grim and megalomanical monarch of the European nation Latveria, has been an occasional ally to Doctor Strange, although he is one not to be fully trusted. The Sorcerer Supreme has also allied himself with other super heroes. For example, he is the founder and leader of the team called "The Defenders," whose original members included the incredible Hulk and Namor the Submariner. The team would later include such characters as the cosmic spacefarer, the Silver Surfer; the Valkyrie, warrior woman of Asgard; Wolverine, the adamantium-boned mutant; and the martial arts master known as Iron Fist. Doctor Strange is also a member of the mysterious team called the "The Illuminati," which consists of Steven Strange; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four; Prince Namor; Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men: T'Challa, the Black Panther, King of the African land of Wakanda; Black Bolt, leader of the Inhumans; and Tony Stark alias Iron Man, the organizer of this secret society, formed to secretly protect the Earth. In recent years, Doctor Strange has also become a member of "The New Avengers," a branch of the original super team, "The Avengers." Among its diverse rank of heroes are: Spider-man; Wolverine; Ben Grimm, one quarter member of the Fantastic Four; Luke Cage the Power Man; Jessica Jones, Luke Cage's wife and a super powered private investigator; and Carol Danvers, the cosmic powered heroine known as Captain Marvel.

"Enemy Mine:"
This chapter delves into the mystical villains Doctor Strange has battled in defense of Earth. Some of his major foes include: Nightmare, shadowy lord of the realm of dreams; Baron Karl Mordo, disgraced ex-apprentice of the Ancient One, and archenemy of Doctor Strange; and the Dread Dormammu, demonic nemesis from the Dark Dimension. The "Master of the Mystic Arts" has also battled such malevolent enemies as Mephisto, Marvel Comics' crimson incarnation of "the Devil;" Umar the Unrelenting, the sinister sister of Dormammu; and Dracula, the bloodthirsty lord of vampires.

"The All Powerful:"
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange has encountered entities that exist on levels beyond the mortal concepts of good and evil. This chapter describes these awe-inspiring figures. There is Eternity, a being that encompasses the entirety of space and time, envisioned as the universe itself in human form. The Vishanti, a trinity of cosmic beings whose history form the foundation of the title and responsibility, Sorcerer Supreme. The Living Tribunal, the golden, three headed embodiment and guardian of cosmic balance in the myriad realms of the multiverse. These and other sentient cosmic forces have the power to affect the concept humanity calls reality on an inter-galactic and inter-dimensional scale, and part of Doctor Strange's immense task as Sorcerer Supreme is to represent and protect the humble world of Earth from entities whose vision transcends the boundaries of our universe.

"Mystic Realms:"
Doctor Strange's adventures have taken him far beyond the deep blue seas and vast continents of the Earth. His excursions have had the seer of the supernatural enter worlds that are not worlds and dimensions where dreams are made real. This chapter attempts to describe the almost indescribable, the planes of existence that the Sorcerer Supreme regularly explores as guardian of our cherished planetary home. Starting from his Sanctum Sanctorum, a New York victorian brownstone which is more than just a spacious home to the master of magic, Doctor Strange can enter such other dimensional realities as the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, a domain without form or structure; the ethereal realm of Eternity, which is just an aspect of the entity's totality; or the unworld of Ditkopolis, a dimension that pays artistic tribute to the co-creator of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko.

"Spellbound:"
This section of the book describes Doctor Strange's relationship with the power of magic, his bond with the mystical forces of the Earth and beyond, and his spiritual link to such magical entities as the Vishanti, as well as Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Raggador, and Watoomb. These cosmic connections form the basis of some of the spells the "Master of the Mystic Arts" invokes, like "the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak," the Roving Rings of Raggador," and the "Winds of Watoomb."

"Objects of Enchantment:"
The book's final chapter, these pages describe the invaluable mystical tomes and talismans Doctor Strange has that aid him in his charge as defender of Earth. It offers interesting background histories of these remarkable relics, which include: the Eye of Agamotto, the magical amulet that is the special ornament of Doctor Strange's mystical uniform; the scarlet Cloak of Levitation, which gives the Sorcerer Supreme the gift of flight; and the Book of the Vishanti, the great volume of magical knowledge, spells and incantations compiled by former masters of white magic.

As written by Billy Wrecks, Nick Jones, and Danny Graydon, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exploration of the "strange tales" of the great comic character that is Doctor Strange. It reveals many concepts and background facts that even this long time fan of the character did not know, like: Baron Mordo's middle name is 'Amadeus!' Or the distinctive round window designed atop Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum is called "The Window of Worlds," and "is decorated with a pattern of the Anomaly Rue, the Seal of the Vishanti." This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.

The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.

Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.

It comes recommended by this reviewer. Enjoy and may the Vishanti watch over you!

Wide variety of information. Good Book!
By Galactus
Usually get most things at Amazon, but got this at a local Comic Book Store. I really liked it. Has enough information to get you caught up before the movie and covers a lot of details I had no idea about and will keep you from having to read 200 comics to find out!

Elements of Pattern Theory (Johns Hopkins Studies in the Mathematical Sciences), by Ulf Grenander

Although pattern and image analysis have their conceptual foundations in the mathematical sciences, it is now applied widely in many other areas of science. It embodies the techniques used to evaluate and compare the patterns, shapes, and other images―natural and artificial―that may range from such electronic forms as CAT scans and satellite images to patterns as ancient as the non-random assembly of letters that comprise a language.

In Patterns Ulf Grenander has written a book both for the student of mathematics and for the specialist who works with patterns in other fields, such as biology and medicine. Grenander begins by examining the nature of patterns and what distinguishes them from randomness. He then provides the mathematical foundation for the concepts and phenomena introduced. Finally, he provides examples and demonstrations of computer algorithms that permit the reader to recreate and explore some of the patterns discussed in the book.

"A dazzling tour de force on patterns. It is a substantial, original contribution by a leader―indeed, originator―in the field, and has the potential for significant impact on the direction of future research. It includes a profoundly insightful treatise on patterns, their nature, and the role of randomness in generating and analyzing them. Examples range from language to weaving to cellular biology. Even non-statisticians and non-scientists reading this material will find their thoughts clarified and provoked."―Alan F. Karr, National Institute of Statistical Sciences
