As author Richard Hendel notes, designing a book is a complicated process, "especially because there isn't a single way to proceed." Hendel is associate director and design and production manager at University of North Carolina Press, ideally qualified to give a true picture of the life of a book designer.

On Book Design is divided into three sections. In "Looking Like Books" Hendel discusses what makes a book, a book. More than just the author's words, a book is defined by its typography, the size of the fonts, the width of the margins, where the subheads fall on a page. While this may seem obvious, what is harder to determine is the right combination of all these subjective elements. If a reader is paying more attention to the arrangement of the words rather than to the content itself, the design may be overdone.

The book's second section, "The Design Begins Here" describes exactly what it is that designers do-from the big picture stuff (e.g., matching the author's content and tone) to the smallest details (e.g., determining whether to choose old-style or line numbers).

Scattered throughout the book are samples of projects designed by Hendel and others. This is extremely helpful and often fascinating, though on occasion the level of detail Hendel provides borders on the tedious.

In the third section, "How Designers Work," Hendel hands the page over to several respected designers. Some work entirely on the computer; others, like Hendel, use pencil and paper to create their first design drafts. As Hendel notes, "What is important is not the mechanics of making the layouts but finding exactly the right design and typeface for the author's words."

When Henry David Thoreau made a complete list of each and every possession he had at Walden Pond, he curiously omitted one thing: He forgot the pencil that enabled him to make the list. Successful book design, says Richard Hendel, often goes as unnoticed and unappreciated as Thoreau's pencil. It is, as Beatrice Warde once said, a transparent goblet, so that (writes Hendel) "the very invisibility of its design is to its credit." Hendel should know, having worked for many years as a highly regarded book designer, most recently with the University of North Carolina Press. Thankfully, this is not a prosaic instructional manual--"it is a book about how books are designed," he cautions, "not a book about how to design books"--but a medley of honest reflections about how book designers see, think, and feel. Written by the author and eight other American and British designers, it is illustrated by 110 black and white examples, among them several pieces by Iowa-born designer Merle Armitage and the University of Nebraska's Richard Eckersley, two of the century's most inventive (yet unheralded) book designers. With surprising candor, the text asks: How do book designers get their ideas? What do they worry about? How did they approach a particular book? And what difference does it all make? After all, confides Hendel, prize-winning book designs are largely unappreciated, cost more to produce, and are rarely available in bookstores. "There isn't any correlation between what books look like and how they sell," he laments. "Design seems to make no difference." Of particular interest is a section about the design of this book, which led us to wonder how well it will sell, whether bookstores will carry it, and (hopefully, because it has much to offer) the extent to which it might inspire other, younger book designers. Went from a 40% to 85% on pharm portion of nursing program exit exam with this!

I absolutely love these pharm cards! I am in my last semester of nursing school, and had to really crash study for my exit exam. With these cards, I was able to go from a 40% on pharm to an 85%. I am a visual learner and these silly but very helpful cartoons really work for me. I highly recommend them! All of my classmates love them once they see them. They are a little bulky as the spiral notebook itself is pretty thick, but I had no problem holding them in my lab coat or scrub pocket... so long as I tied my pants tight!

Use as an accompainment for studying for Pharm....

I like it...for what it does and for the medications it does have. Meaning, that i wouldn't skip buying the book I needed for pharmacology but it has made it alot easier when it comes to studying for pharm as the cute pictures and mnemoics makes it easier to understand certain class of drugs and medications. But as probably noted in previous reviews, there is a lack of certain medications and shouldn't be used as a basis alone for studying for pharm.

If you enjoyed "Beyond," Maureen A Miller's fantastic YA scifi romantic adventure, you've undoubtably been waiting for the continuation of the Aimee & Zak story, and you will not be disappointed with "Two Suns," picking up 5 earth years after Aimee returns to earth to see her parents and get her college engineering degree (this is one intelligent, gutsy, beautiful heroine). She and Zak (the handsome, brooding warrior from Ziratak) agree to reunite at the place she was originally beamed aboard the immense spaceship the Horus. She is beamed up, but where is Zak? He is missing in action during a battle with the Korons, the emotionless rock creatures who invaded his home planet when he was a child and killed his parents and sister. Rescue missions are cursory after all this time, but that doesn't deter Aimee, who enlists the secret aid of her friends (new & old, human and machine) to repair an outdated shuttle and launch their own rescue. What follows is the most exciting scifi adventure I've read in a long time, with just the right amount of out-of-this world romance between two of the most appealing and adventuresome characters in YA fiction today. There is not one excess word in "Two Suns," the excitement doesn't stop from the intriguing characters enlisted to help Aimee through the breath-holding takeoff and flight to Ziratak, the somewhat tenuous reunion of lovers and way more surprises along the way. Exciting battle scenes and a glorious ending...all in all a totally wonderful reading experience. I'm already waiting for #3!

Fantastic sequel!

Aimee and Zak - two people from different worlds, but with a love that spans the galaxy. It's been five long years since Aimee last saw Zak. He'd insisted that she go back to Earth and explain to her parents where she had been and, only then, would he return for her. She did as he asked and waited in the woods looking for the beam to lift her to the space ship Horus. Finally, it appeared, but Aimee got the shock of her young life. Zak wasn't on board and he was feared dead. Not believing that Zak was dead, she began to plan his rescue with a ragtag band of rejects aboard the Horus.

I've eagerly awaited this sequel and it was well worth it! Two Suns is a captivating and engrossing story of two people who would do anything to find each other including risking their own lives. They were incomplete shells alone. The author does a fantastic job of letting the reader feel Aimee and Zak's most inner thoughts and their determination not only to survive, but to heal their fractured hearts. The secondary characters add much to the story. I loved JOH--his declarations made me laugh. If you've ever suffered the pain and joy of a love so all-consuming you could hardly breathe, you'll absolutely love the story of Aimee and Zak. Highly recommended.

Action, romance, danger, humor, and the kitchen sink nicely pulled together in this charming tale. Miller has produced a perfect sequel to Beyond. While my reviews are usually longer, the intro into this one is excellent. There's not much more I would say to launch a reader into this tale...pardon the pun.

About the Author
Nannette LaRee Hernandez is a California Native, born on a hot July 4 evening in 1965. She has lived in California, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Arizona, and Texas. Nannette wrote her college Thesis on Sex and Relationships and why that old ‘Chemistry Click’ never lasts past the first real Relationship Crisis. After college, Nannette opened a consulting business in Arlington, Texas and listened to what men had to say about women. Nannette concluded at the end of her research that men want sex above anything else because they rarely get it without a negotiation, quarrel, sulking glare, guilt-trip or demanded favor in return. Nannette then wrote, "Creative Screwing" a book for blind, ill-informed and sexually heartless women, that speaks the blunt truth about men and sex and shows these women the vast proportion of their power, and then gives them permission to fuck like THEY REALLY WANT TOO---hoping to inspire at least one women to enjoy her life. great ideas, not-so-great message to women

I picked up this book because I was looking for some new ways to spice things up in the bedroom. There are many good and bad things about this book. I'll start with the good:
1. Tons and tons of ideas and descriptions of how to perform various acts in the bedroom (some of these are straight out of a bad porn movie, like dipping the crotch of your panties into your man's beer and then wringing them out in his mouth, but hey, to each his/her own)
2. Tips on how to venture into the more taboo areas of sex comfortably and safely
3. Each section includes lots of references to other websites and books if you're looking for more information about a certain topic or places to purchase toys or lingerie
4. Encourages women to avoid withholding sex as a form of punishment and to try to keep their emotional "poison" out of the bedroom
5. Really emphasizes that women should derive pleasure and satisfaction in pleasing their men, but this is where things start to trickle over into the not-so-great parts of this book....

Here's what I didn't like:
1. Ms. Hernandez writes that men are primal creatures who would spending their lives running amok, eating, sleeping, and screwing to their heart's content (okay, I agree with this) and as women we must love, nay, WORSHIP their "ego". Essentially, 9/10 of this book is how we as women must worship and adore our man's ego to the utmost extent of our capabilities, and this is the only way to keep a man in a monogamous relationship. This is disturbing to me because it sends the message to women that if we a) are not essentially a sex slave to our men and/or b) don't give them the best sex they've ever had, then they will cheat or leave. What a horrible message to send to women!
2. There are endless chapters on how to please your man, but only a few dedicated to masturbating, and absolutely NONE on how to communicate with your man if HE is not pleasing YOU. I'm a firm believer that you must know how to bring yourself to orgasm and be comfortable showing this to your lover, but I was extraordinarily disappointed that there was absolutely no instruction at all on how to talk to your man if he is not satisfying you in bed. In my opinion, this book really misses the mark here because if the woman is doing EVERYTHING she can to be a fantastic lover but is getting nothing in return, then she will undoubtedly build up resentment and frustration.

So in general, if you're looking for ways to improve your love life and need a few ideas, you will be able to find them in this book! As women, I do believe we should acknowledge the primal side of men but that does not mean that we should cater to it entirely. And for those of us in long term monogamous relationships, it IS really important to become REALLY GOOD at pleasing our men in bed, BUT he should also be willing to do the same. I hope readers keep in mind that while great sex IS a component of a great relationship, but not the ONLY component. If you are not compatible with a man on other levels (e.g., common interests, common goals in life, common morals) then the relationship won't work out no matter how good you are in bed. In fact, you could be the woman that the man goes to for an affair, but doesn't have a secure, long-term relationship with....

Everyone needs this book!

I stumbled upon Nannette’s book uh… I’m not sure why…lol, and loved it. As a guy, I found it both redeeming and rewarding, feeling like a lifelong weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I was finally allowed to be what I/we are as men…which is sadly disregarded, ridiculed, compromised and disrespected in society today.

Don’t think so ladies? Well, that’s my point. Mainstream society is SO crowded with “you go grrrl”, “you deserve to be happy”, and “you’re entitled to do/be what you want”, for women, that no matter how random, obtuse or even self-serving that may be we seem to have lost our way to community, respect and even enjoyment of the male.

While the book tends to oversimplify us, it doesn’t follow the usual path of doing so to poke or put us down! Rather, it rejoices in the simplicity of what we are, clearing a path for celebration together and encouraging (often through scolding) women to let go…and learn to enjoy the incredible ride we’re capable of giving…if you just stop holding us over the barrel for sex and attitude.

Written as a guide for women, few will get it…and fewer who ought to read it and get it will…which is sad. Like some of the reviews herein, the mainstream female is more likely to get caught on the notion that letting go and doing what he wants and needs, in his male terms…is somehow a step in the wrong direction, feminism wise! I can assure you, nothing could be further from the truth. Having such a woman myself, who gets it and has let go…she has me forever, so close and dear that there just aren’t words!

And for men? “Creative Screwing” is their “50 Shades of Grey” not only because it makes it okay to have a penis, but rejoices in everything that comes with it. Raw, hot, theatrical, boiling lust rises out of the groin and dives deep into the heart and soul, where it’s not only acceptable to be male…but in everyone’s best interests to join in and celebrate. Nannette makes no bones about using the language of men as it applies to sex and love; dirty, guttural, and crude as it comes. In so doing, she not only shatters the barriers, taboos, and predispositions that keep women at arm’s length from their men, but affirms every man’s path to the deepest kind of love that most women (and men) only dream about.

Bravo, Nannette. Get the book gang! I bought three, for myself and male friends. The ONLY downside? Trying to share this with women will surely have the air that you are trying to sell them on it…! But, if you have, or can find one that can put that on hold long enough to absorb the contents AND try it out…you will have no need for anything else in your life, ever! Well, other than food, sports, and beer, ha ha!

Enlightening

One insight by Ms. Hernandez illuminated the rest of the work. The woman who becomes aware of the potential which comes from Becoming an Erotic Enchantress will assume whatever control she wants in a relationship. It will be worth it to both people.
