A unique body of medieval literature, the Sagas rank with the world's greatest literary treasures--as epic as Homer, as deep in tragedy as Sophocles, as engagingly human as Shakespeare. Set around the turn of the last millennium, these stories depict with an astonishingly modern realism the lives and deeds of the Norse men and women who first settled Iceland and of their descendants, who ventured further west--to Greenland and, ultimately, the coast of North America itself.
The ten Sagas and seven shorter tales in this volume include the celebrated "Vinland Sagas," which recount Leif Eiriksson's pioneering voyage to the New World and contain the oldest descriptions of the North American continent.
For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

From Library Journal
The Icelandic Sagas are among the masterpieces of world literature whose composition stretches from about the year 1000 to 1500. Presenting the adventures of Norse and Viking heroes, the sagas are told with ritual simplicity and a realism that anticipate the modern novel. This volume offers nine full sagas and six tales, all new translations by various hands and all part of The Complete Sagas of the Icelanders, also edited by Thorsson. Published to mark the 1000th anniversary of Leif Ericksson's voyage to North America, as told in the Vinland Sagas, this selection includes (along with the Vinland Sagas) the famous Egil's Saga and that of Gisli Sursson. The volume also offers a preface by novelist Jane Smiley and a scholarly introduction by Robert Kellogg of the University of Virginia. Wonderful for anyone interested in world literature, this selection is recommended for public and academic libraries.

List of All Sagas Included
By Tyrel Sorensen
As a student of archaeology and history who plans to make the study of the Medieval Norse the focus of his career, buying this collection of sagas was a no-brainer.
My one gripe is that there is no list (that I could find at least) of which sagas and tales are included in this book, which happens to be some pretty important information for someone who's looking to quickly beef up their library with Norse Literature.
So, in order to save anyone I can some time, and possibly money, I've listed all the sagas and tales included in this book here:
Egil's Saga
The Saga of the People of Vatnsdal
The Saga of the People of Laxardal
Bolli Bollason's Tale
The Saga of Hrafnkel Frey's Godi
The Saga of the Confederates
Gisli Sursson's Saga
The Saga of Gunnlaug Serpent-Tongue
The Saga of Ref the Sly
The Saga of the Greenlanders
Eirik the Red's Saga
The Tale of Thorstein Staff-Struck
The Tale of Halldor Snorrason II
The Tale of Sarcastic Halli
The Tale of Thorstein Shiver
The Tale of Audun from the West Fjords
The Tale of the Story-Wise Icelander
I hope that you find this list helpful!

Better then I expected
By MEL
This book has already provided hours of enjoyable reading for both myself and my 15 year old son and we aren't even half way done. The book consists of 9 complete sagas, and 6 tales, two introductions-- one very in depth, reference maps and images, a short glossary of nordic terms and an index of all the characters involved--a very important addition considering there are sometimes 5 or 6 characters with the same name. Some characters interweive in multiple sagas which I found a fun way of figuring the timing. I was afraid the stories would either be dry like a history book or fantastical and unrealistic like mythology. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find the tales flow very well, never drag, and are believable and brilliantly practical. Like a well written and researched novel, this book is hard to put down and I find myself mourning when I reach the death scenes of characters I grew to love in each saga: such as the handsome and lucky Ingimund; the violent, ugly, but ultimately loveable Emil Skallagrimsson; and the unwanted slave's-son, Thorkel Thorgrimsson Scratcher, who despite everyone's heckling, grows up to be wise and heroic enough to lead his whole people. If you love imagining Vikings and want a better understanding of their thoughts and ways, this is a fun way to learn more about them and gain insight into the adventurous settling of a small but important nation.

Highly recommended. I found it relaxing after my divorce. Lots of raids and plundering.
